Self defense against Somali pirates

This interesting topic was requested by someone i know. Piracy has been a problem on the coast of Somalia for a long time. I will go through a basic self defense guide on how to deal with Somali pirates.

1) Escape or evade the threat - If possible, try to flee or escape as soon as you see the pirates in sight. The sooner you can get away, the better.

2) Comply - If you get captured, comply with the pirates. Give them everything they want. Nothing is worth more than your life. Don't give them a reason to shoot you. Don't provoke them to violence. In short, don't be a hero. Surprisingly, Somali pirates rarely kill innocent civilians so the chances of them killing you is very low as the video highlights.

3) Fight - If for some reason they plan on killing you anyway, it's time to fight. Use the surrounding environment to provide cover and concealment. Disarm one pirate if armed and use his or her own weapon. You must be quick and eliminate the threat quickly or you might not get a second chance to escape let alone live. If you want to learn more about how to deal with multiple armed attackers, read my post "self defense against multiple armed attackers" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2017/01/self-defense-against-multiple-armed.html.)

In conclusion, this is how you deal with Somali pirates in self defense. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. The most fatal mistakes you can make in self defense

When it comes to self defense, you must be aware of training methods or lack of understanding that could cost you your life. These are very common mistakes that I have seen many people make. By taking them into consideration, you will learn what to do and what not to do in order to effectively defend yourself. The mistakes are as follows:

 * Failure to defuse or de-escalate - The most common and biggest mistake many self defense instructors and students make is failure to prevent a situation from getting violent. Even if they do, it's rarely discussed. You cannot provoke someone or allow the situation to get worse and then claim self defense. You cannot just attack someone because you "feared for your safety" or you wanted to "teach someone a lesson."

This video is an example of such a case. The aggressor in the train starts taunting and acting aggressively towards others before someone trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu applies a chokehold. What's wrong with this situation? He didn't try to de-escalate or defuse the aggressor first.

Nothing justifies you initiating the first attack. The level of response must be proportional to the level of danger. As long as your potential attacker is talking, there's time to defuse the situation. If you fail to de-escalate a situation from getting violent and have to attack, it's too late.

* "Walk away from a fight " - You've probably been told that if your up against someone who is angry with you, walk away. What's wrong with this advice? You didn't defuse your aggressor. If your aggressor is angry with you, walking away sends the message "you aren't worth my time and you don't matter.. " Your aggressor will feel mocked and even more angered then possibly attack you from behind. This seems like a humble approach but very unwise in practice.

* Assuming you know your enemy - Alot of self defense instructors assume that you will be attacked by a stranger. They then base their training on situations they imagine would happen. In reality, most attackers are people who you know. Cases where a complete stranger is going to jump out of nowhere and grab you from behind is very rare. Your enemy is most likely going to be your friend, a family member, or spouse first. Once you establish a relationship with said person say a spouse, you will eventually let your guard down and lose the will to fight. By the time you realize the danger, it will too late. That's why many serial killers were successful in their crimes because they were very social and established a relationship with their victims. The life of Ted Bundy is one infamous example. You need to be very careful who you let in your life to prevent violence in the future. To learn more, check my blog post out "know your enemy in self defense" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2017/02/know-your-enemy-in-self-defense.html)

* Assuming that you are invincible - Doesn't matter how much self defense you know, you will make mistakes no matter how small and they will cost you. Even if you survive a violent situation, you might still have to live with irreversible damage. Could be an amputated limb, loss of an eye, scars, malfunctioning body parts, PTSD, the list goes on. You are not invincible. Your body is very fragile which is why you need to pick your battles wisely.

* Failure to resolve conflict - One of your most powerful tools to self defense is conflict resolution. If you don't resolve conflict, you allow the situation to escalate and unresolved conflict can lead to violence. Around half of the homicides involve domestic violence and abusive relationships. If you receive a text message from a friend or acquaintance threatening to attack you, that's when you act. Don't wait until you are under attack to respond. You should already be trying to resolve conflict peacefully to prevent violence. Once you resolve conflict, you give people less reason to take out their negative emotions out on you.

* Neglecting your environment - Many self defense schools train in a nice open area on a mat clear of weapons indoors. In the real world, that kind of environment doesn't exist. When your in a violent situation, you will either be in public or in your house. There will be many barriers and improvised weapons your attacker can use. There might be glass on the floor or confined areas making it difficult to defend yourself properly. The environment and how well you can use it will determine how likely you are to survive an attack.

* Neglecting laws on self defense - Many people practicing self defense seem to forget everything about the legal system. They think "well the law in my land says that i am permitted to do X..." That may be true but there'll still be an investigation to determine if you were acting in self defense or not. If you have a weak case, you might end up serving time in prison. That's why you need to be mindful with how you defend yourself physically in order to not look like the aggressor.

* Assuming self defense is only physical - Self defense is more than just physical. There's verbal and legal self defense that are just as important. Many self defense schools make the mistake of only focusing on hand-to-hand combat for example but there's no emotions being incorporated in the training. In reality, your attacker may start off intimidating you, taunting you, screaming at you, or insulting you to reduce your confidence. He or she might be enraged or frustrated before the fight starts. You might freeze under those situations or lose confidence and get hit in the face before you know it. You will also need to defend yourself under the court of law or you might get charged as the aggressor than vice versa. Psychology, emotions, and so many other variables affect how likely you are to survive a violent struggle.

* Failure to recognize danger - The ability to recognize danger is a very important skill in self defense. Let's suppose someone with suspicious behavior walks past you and pulls out a knife then slits your throat from behind. You won't have enough time to react if you do not foresee danger and by the time you do, it will be too late. This video stresses the importance of foreseeing danger. A knifeman walks in a store, slits one guy's throat, and continues attacking.

*"You have to know what it's like to get hit " - This is a ridiculous belief circulating in some self defense circles. Why not train to avoid hits and delivering them instead? Taking a hit is counter-productive. Training to take hits defeats the purpose of self defense. If you train to take attacks, this picture sums up what will eventually happen to you.
* Failure to keep your distance - Keeping your distance is very important because it allows for reaction time and safety measures. The closer you are to someone, the harder it is to respond effectively. Suppose you were talking to someone face to face in public and suddenly, the person stabs you multiple times. You wouldn't be able to respond in time because your eyes would be too focused on the person's face to see the knifeman reach for the knife in his or her pockets. Keeping your distance prevents that from happening. This video gives an example of what happens when you don't keep your distance.

* Failure to get to safety - When you neutralized the threat, you must run as fast as you can out of danger. If you defeated your attacker in hand-to-hand combat and he or she is still conscious, he or she can pull out a gun then shoot you. There's also the risk of multiple attackers coming in to help your attacker.

* Failure to adapt - There's only so much you can only train for in self defense. There will probably be some scenarios that you did not train for. Your attacker might open fire on you or others from a distance or a bomb might go off followed by an attack and you might get taken by surprise. When this happens, you will need to assess the situation in order to determine the best of course of action. For example, if i was approached by someone wielding a knife demanding my valuables then i would keep my distance but also comply. My eyes would be on the knife as i hand over my valuables. If the knifeman still wants to attack me, that's when i attack and attempt to disarm him or her. Adapting to every situation is crucial to making the choice that will ultimately save your life in the end.

Science and self defense

I'm going to be honest and say that almost all of the self defense systems you see out there are unreliable. Reason why i say that is because they haven't been tested by science. I have not seen one scientific study examining the effectiveness of a martial art or a "reality based self defense system." Of course you'll find some studies such as "Fight Science" (see video below) examining the nature of martial arts' legends but fighting is quite different from self defense.

Science is about making observations and testing out ideas. It's about establishing a controlled environment and eliminating possible biases that could affect the results. Science is about making measurements and applying what is scientifically known to the real world. Unfortunately, so many self defense instructors rely on experience or tradition to draw their own conclusions on what they deem is effective self defense.

For example some police officers teaching self defense will tell you something along the lines of "I've worked with many people using guns so in my experience the best way to deal with a gun is..." Easy for them to say because they are police officers. Their job isn't self defense. Their job is to subdue and prosecute criminals. Police officers rarely have to deal with gun disarming because they almost always make sure they carry loaded guns. Police officers have guns, batons, chemical sprays, tasers, back up, the list goes on. You don't on the other hand. There are so many different variables and factors in each violent situation. Do you really think it's a smart idea to base your self defense training on one cop's experience?

Too many people are looking for the ultimate fighting system for self defense that will protect them in every situation. The reality is there is none because almost none have been tested in a scientific setting. There are simply too many factors and safety concerns that it's nearly impossible to repeatedly test in a lab. Some martial arts masters have failed to live up to their training when it came to a completely different variable as shown in this video below. In the end, all we have are theories when it comes to techniques and combat. What happens is people learn combat in a certain school then end up not using it, using only some of it, or use it only to find it's useless in a real violent encounter. If we cannot scientifically test self defense combat systems or martial arts effectiveness in violence, we cannot expect to have reality-based self defense.

What's the best way to learn how to defend yourself? Use your head, not your fists. Study the human body and it's weaknesses. Study physics and it's relationship to the body. Study the proper force and speed needed to deliver a knock out or incapacitating blow. Study criminal behavior. Study how crimes occur and the warning signs of an impending attack. Study human behavior and human relationships. Study the environment that you are in. Listen, learn, and continue to have an open mind. Apply the knowledge that you've learned in self defense rather than relying on a system to do all the work for you.

Self defense against a chainsaw attack

Chainsaw attacks might seem like a rare occurrence but they have happened before as shown in this video. What to do in these kinds of situations? How do you disarm someone attacking you with a chainsaw? Simple. You apply the same principles as you would with any weapon such as distance control, closing the gap and intercepting attacks, avoiding the line of attack, controlling the weapon, isolating it, and disarming. Read my post "self defense against a baseball bat" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/self-defense-against-baseball-bat.html) if you haven't already. The basic principles are as follows.

1) Control the distance - In this video, notice how some threw chairs at the chainsaw-wielding assailant. You'll want to use improvised weapons and objects such as tables to keep your attacker at bay. If there are none, you'll want to be at a safe distance but not too safe to where you can't disarm your attacker quickly.

2) Close the gap and intercept - The best time to strike is before or after an attack is completed. When someone is wielding a chainsaw, he or she can slash and thrust the weapon. If the attacker thrusts the weapon forward, you'll want to move to the side quickly and quickly close the gap then control the weapon. If you only move to the side but not try to control the weapon or close in on your attacker, you will get cut down. Timing is a matter of life and death.

3) Disarm - Once you got a firm two-handed grip on the weapon for better leverage, disarm by rotating it upwards or downwards then forcing it out of your attacker's hands. You could also the attacker's own momentum against him or her. You could also attack the legs and disrupt balance. Use kicks and other attacks as distractions. The choice is yours.

Practice with a sparring partner wielding a fake chainsaw.  If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. How to use brass knuckles in self defense

In this blog post, i will teach you how to defend yourself with brass knuckles step by step. As i mentioned before in my blog post "self defense against brass knuckles" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/self-defense-against-brass-knuckles.html), brass knuckles can shatter bone and damage soft tissues. A hit with brass knuckles and you could end up potentially killing someone. It is therefore crucial that you only use brass knuckles in a life or death situation.

1) Wear brass knuckles properly - Brass knuckles are a powerful tool to use against an attacker but you must wear them properly. Otherwise, you will end up injuring your hands and possibly breaking your own fist in the process. The correct way of wearing brass knuckles is depicted in this video.

2) Protect your weapon hand - If you only have one pair of brass knuckles, you must protect that hand. I recommend changing your stance and putting your free hand in front of you. By attacking with the free hand as the lead and using it for trapping or defensively, you make it harder for your attacker to disarm you. If your attacker manages to somehow grab the arm controlling the weapon, you will be put in a difficult situation. Use your free hand as a distraction or a means of creating an opening and strike with the brass knuckles. If your good then you can land a hit with brass knuckles by all means.

3) Attack the body's vital areas - When using brass knuckles, you must strike at the body's vital areas to use them effectively preferably bone. Striking the sternum or ribs could cause these bones to break, possibly causing organ damage and difficulty breathing. Striking the collarbone could make it difficult for your opponent to move his or her arms. Striking the jaw and underneath the chin will cause a knock out if enough force is applied.

4) Use curved attacks - Since you don't want to injure your hands with the impact of the blows, i'd advise for you to use attacks from curved angles such as hook punches or uppercuts. Other than that, you apply the same principles and skills in hand to hand combat as if you were unarmed.

Practice with a partner using toy brass knuckles and safety equipment during sparring. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self defense against an axe

If you read my previous post on "self defense against a baseball bat" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/self-defense-against-baseball-bat.html) then you should have a basic understanding of how to deal with someone attacking you with an axe. The same principles apply except be mindful that the most dangerous part is the bladed part of the axe. Here's several tips on how to disarm someone with an axe.

1) Keep your distance - If you stand too close to someone with an axe, you will get hit. If you stand too far away, you will eventually get hit. You must stand only a few inches away from the axe in order to strike quickly. Land kicks to create distance when appropriate.

2) Intercept your attacker and close the gap -  The best time to strike is before or after an attack. As soon as your attacker is about to swing the axe, close the distance between you and your attacker. Do not hesitate for a split second or you will get hit.

3) Control the weapon and disarm - Once you have closed in on your attacker, you can grab the wooden part of the axe with both hands and rotate it upwards or downwards then disarm. You can also use the axeman's momentum to carry him/her over to the ground. You can kick the side of the knee to disrupt the axeman's balance as you disarm. There's several ways you can disarm the axeman. Nick Drossos explains more in detail.

Self defense against chair

This self defense guide will teach you how to disarm an attacker with a chair. You apply the same principles with any blunt force weapons namely a baseball bat (see "http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/self-defense-against-baseball-bat.html" 1) Control distance 2) Close the gap and intercept 3) Control the weapon 4) Disarm.

1) Control the distance - Stay within a certain distance away from the chair. If you are too close, you will get hit. If you are too far, you will also get hit eventually.

2) Close the gap and intercept the attack - The best way to attack is before or after an attack. You must not hesitate to commit to intercepting your attacker. Timing is critical.

3) Control the weapon - With both hands, grab the chair and rotate it upwards or downwards.

4) Disarm - When your attacker's hands are loosened due to the pressure, pull away forcefully. You can use kicks to create distance between you and the attacker.

Keep in mind a chair can be used as a projectile so you will have to evade it at a certain range. Practice these principles with a sparring partner carefully.

Self defense against a hostage situation

This self defense guide will teach you what to do in a hostage situation. Let's suppose that your in a bank or store when suddenly, an armed attacker or attackers take you hostage. It's very important that you have an idea of what to do in those scenarios as many things could go wrong.

* Disarm - If you are the only one taken hostage then you apply the same principles as you would if you were disarming a gunman or knifeman (see "how to disarm a gunman" http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-gunman.html and "self defense against a knifeman" http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-knife.html). If you and your attacker are surrounded by police then you have the advantage. Distract him or her before you attack. If possible, try to get the attacker to direct the weapon away from you. As soon as you sense an opportunity then strike with explosive speed. Control the weapon, redirect the line of attack, take your attacker down, and disarm. This video explains which techniques don't work and which one is more effective in a hostage scenario.

* Comply - If you and other people are taken hostage by multiple attackers then comply. Do whatever the armed attackers ask of you and get into a non-threatening posture. Doesn't matter how much self defense you know, it's safer to comply in these situations. You don't want to risk any innocent people getting hurt or killed. You and others also face the risk of getting accidentally shot by the police.

* Gather and leak information - As you comply, gather as much information as you can on your attackers. Are they mentally ill? Are they committing an armed robbery? Are they terrorists with a political agenda? What demands are they making? Who are they making the demands to? Do they intend on killing the hostages eventually? Where are they located? Where are the hostages located? Is there only one attacker or multiple? What kind of environment are you in? When you've gathered enough information on who your hostage takers are then you ought to find a way to leak it to the police. You could leave a door unlocked, a window open, create an opening in an area of the building, messages, etc. so the police can gather intelligence. If you can't then don't worry about it. Your safety should be your first priority. The information you get also lets you know what the proper response is.

* Escape - If you have an opportunity to escape without your attackers noticing then do so. Give other hostages the opportunity to escape undetected if possible. Otherwise, lay low and comply with your hostage takers.

* Empathize with your hostage takers - Try to get them to see you and others as human beings. Figure out why they are taking you hostage and what they want. This allows you to get a glimpse of the kind of people they are.

* Plan your moves - Complying isn't enough, you should already have a plan A and plan B then a plan C. Plan A should be comply. Plan B should be to leak info. or escape. Your last plan should be to fight. Don't just lay or sit there waiting for the police to rescue you. Hoping that they'll come in and save you while you remain completely unharmed is unrealistic. By the time they come in, you might already be dead. In the meantime, you need to be proactive and use your time wisely.

* Have a plan of attack - As soon as the hostage takers intend on killing or torturing their hostages and the police haven't arrived yet then you need to act quickly. You should've collaborated with the other hostages in taking out the hostage takers at some point. Use the environment to your advantage. Use whatever weapons and methods of distraction are available. Remember when faced with multiple hostage takers, the best way to deal with them is dealing with one at a time. You will need to take out at least one armed hostage taker as quickly and as silently as possible then disarm him or her without alerting the others. Even if it's not possible, you just need enough time to get the weapon and attack. In these types of situations, the use of deadlier force might be necessary than in a normal self defense situation. You might need to kill as many as you can with your bare hands or the weapon. As soon as the police enter or the hostage takers are eliminated, you need to comply with the police. Get down on the ground with your hands above your head and drop your weapons to communicate the police that you are not a threat.

In this particular situation, notice how the gunman pointed his gun at a man and the man responded by attempting a disarm. Immediately, the others rushed in to tackle the gunman and disarmed him. If you are trained in dealing with weapons and these types of situations then you have to take the initiative. By taking the initiative, you inspire others to take action.

Practice these tips with multiple sparring partners in various scenarios. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self defense against an active shooter

Active shootings have become more common and have taken many lives so it's of critical importance that you learn what to do before active shootings take place. If you don't have a plan beforehand, you will probably freeze when an active shooter starts firing rounds. This self defense guide teaches you some of the basic and most fundamental keys in dealing with active shootings with a few helpful videos:

1) Situational awareness - Studies show that active shootings are usually planned in advance. Active shooters have some emotional and psychological issues before they go out to commit horrendous acts (see link below.) They also have access to weapons. It's important you keep track of those around you and their body language. Signs such as pulling shirts down, wearing unusual clothing, or leaving bags in certain areas are key to spotting active shooters. Knowing where the exits are and where your attention needs to be are also key elements in situational awareness. If you suspect an active shooting is about to take place, you need to take action.

2) Escape - As soon as you sense shots being fired or smoke grenades being tossed in, you need to escape through the nearest exit as soon as possible. Some active shooters will use smoke to conceal themselves before they shoot civilians. If you have a gun, you don't want to try and engage in a gunfight with an active shooter. This is because if you get killed in the process, you won't be able to effectively help others. You may also be mistaken for the active shooter by the police and killed by accident. If you can land accurate shots as you make your escape then do so but ultimately you will want to get to safety and call for help. Make sure that you run in unpredictable patterns only if the shooter is firing at you. Other than that, run as fast as you can in a straight line to an exit. Be sure to alert others of the danger to prevent them from entering.

3) Hide - If you are stuck inside a building then you need to hide. Before you do, you will need to get as many people following you as possible if they want to survive an active shooting. Get inside a room and lock the doors. Turn off all lights and barricade the doors. Turn off your cellphones and be as quiet as possible. Get down as low as you can in a far corner of the room to avoid gunfire. If the active shooter sees that he or she cannot access the room quickly enough, the shooter might believe there's no one there or not bother trying to break in.

4) Fight - If you are caught in a situation where you absolutely must fight as a last resort then you need a strategy and end the threat by any means necessary. If you have an ally such as a cop or civilian trained in firearms then you need to protect him or her at all costs. If that person dies, you lose a huge advantage over the active shooter. If you are with a group of people then you have a numbers advantage against the active shooter. If you are trained in gun disarming then you need to take the initiative and take out the gunman yourself. Since there's only active shooter, he or she cannot defend against every attacker. Perhaps you could have someone serve as bait to distract the gunman while you take the gunman down and attack until you disarm him or her. Once the gunman is down, you could have the other survivors use weapons or hold the shooter down then disarm him or her. You will need to be resourceful and use cover, concealment, distractions, improvised weapons, among environmental factors when fighting an active shooter.

Self defense against spear

Whether it's a spear, a staff, or any other long thrusting weapon - you will need to learn how to deal with each one using some fundamental principles. They are as follows: 1) Distance control 2) Redirect the weapon 3) Close the gap 4) Control 5) Disarm. That being said, here's some advice on how to defend yourself against a spear attack and even disarm a spearsman.

* Look for an improvised weapon - Look for a weapon that you can use against someone attacking you with a spear. It could be anything such as a gun, knife, rocks, etc. An improvised weapon is better than no weapon especially in these situations. You could use it as a shield, a projectile, or a distraction to blind your attacker's vision as you attack.

* Keep your distance - You have to move around and keep at a certain distance away from the spear. If you are too close, your attacker can make a full committed thrust with the spear and you will get hit. If you stay too far from your attacker, you will eventually get driven back and hurt or killed. Keeping your distance is very critical for what follows next.

* Redirect the line of attack, control the weapon, and close the gap - Timing is of the essence when dealing with a spear thrust or hit. When your attacker makes a committed thrust or hit with the spear, you can move out of the line of attack or simply redirect the line of attack with your hand and grab the weapon. You will want to grab the spear with both hands for better leverage. If you don't then your attacker can redirect the spear or pull away from your grip easily. It's very important to move in close to your attacker's body to avoid having your attacker redirect the spear in your direction. You can kick your attacker in the process as a distraction or in an attempt to get him/her to release the weapon.

* Disarm - Continue to rotate the spear upwards or downwards until the grip is weakened and you can force the spear out of your attacker's hands. From there, you can attack him or her with it.

* Evade when needed - Sometimes you will need to evade a spearsman if you are too far away as the spear can be thrown at you. Be sure to find cover and concealment as quickly as possible.

Spend time practicing with a sparring partner using a fake spear. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self defense against pepper spray

In this self defense guide, i will teach you how to defend yourself against an attacker wielding pepper spray. When defending against pepper spray, you apply almost the same principles as you would when dealing with a gun (see "self defense against a gunman" http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-gunman.html.)

1) Get out of range and line of fire - Pepper sprays have limited range so you can avoid getting sprayed by moving quickly away from your attacker. You also need to move out of the line of fire and into a better position to attack.

2) Take cover - As soon as someone tries to attack you with pepper spray, take cover behind an object or barrier. If none is present, block the pepper spray as you turn your body to the side and close your eyes tightly. This is to prevent the pepper spray from getting into your eyes and affecting you.

3) Attack - The reason why you'll want to block the pepper spray as you would punches is to avoid getting the spray into your eyes but also to avoid any incoming attacks. As soon as you have the opportunity, land your attacks on the person. Even if you get sprayed in the eyes, it will take a few seconds for the pepper spray to take effect. This gives you plenty of time to eliminate the threat quickly. You could grab the arm controlling the pepper spray and break it or takedown your attacker then disarm him or her. When the threat is over, wash the pepper spray out with cold running water and other means.

Practice these principles with a partner using a safe substitute for pepper spray. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self defense against nunchaku

The Nunchaku or nunchucks is a traditional martial arts weapon consisting of two sticks connected with a chain or rope. I will give you some tips on how to deal with someone attacking you with nunchucks. Essentially you apply the same concepts you would with a baseball bat or any blunt force weapon (see "Self defense against a baseball bat" http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/self-defense-against-baseball-bat.html.)

* Find an improvised weapon - Pick up a weapon you could use to defend against nunchucks. If you can't find any then you may want to use clothing and wrap your arm around it to lessen the damage your enemy can do to you. Strike high or low depending on where your enemy swings the nunchucks.

* Intercept your enemy's attacks - The best time to burst into your enemy is before or after an attack is complete. As soon as your attacker is about to swing, close the gap between you and him quickly then block the arm from moving. From there, you strike and disarm the weapon by striking a pressure point in the arm. You could also grab the link holding the sticks together and strike down your enemy.

Practice your timing and these principles during sparring with fake nunchucks. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self defense against multiple armed attackers

If you've read my post "how to fight multiple opponents" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/how-to-fight-multiple-opponents.html) then you should have a basic understanding on how to deal with multiple unarmed opponents. Now what if you are faced with multiple armed attackers? I will elaborate on the weapons aspect from my previous post. Assuming that your attackers have some melee weapons as opposed to all guns (i will deal with gunmen in the future), you will have to fight with quickness and efficiency. Some weapons training will be useful in these situations.

1) Understand the range of the weapons - By having a good understanding of each weapon's range, you are better able to utilize them effectively. For example, if you managed to disarm a swordsman then you can now keep a knifeman (close range weapon) at a distance with your sword (long range weapon.) If you have a knife, you need to time your intercepting moves against long range weapons and attack at close range.

2) Prioritize which weapons to disarm first - In order to be effective in fighting multiple armed attackers, you must be good at prioritizing which attackers to take out first. You must asses which weapons are the most deadly and focus on those. For example, you can keep a knifeman at bay because the weapon is for close quarters but you will likely get shot and killed by a gun. Therefore, you must focus on taking out the gun strategically.

3) Attack the closest attacker, disarm, and retrieve the weapon - If an attacker with a bat or knife comes charging at you, take him/her out as quickly as possible and disarm. You need an equalizer so don't just stay there empty handed - grab the weapon quickly and use it. If you already have a weapon of your own then use it. Any weapon improvised or not is better than no weapon.

4) Strategically move around - Like i outlined in my previous post, you will need to line up your attackers and fight only one a time. If you've already disarmed a knife, keep moving around keeping only one attacker in front of you as you close in and attack. Conserve your energy by striking at vital areas and take down your opponent's efficiently (kick to the knee caps, circle kicks, leg sweeps, etc.) If someone pulls out a gun in the middle of a fight, you'll need to use the other attackers as human shields (rear naked chokes, clinches, moving in front of them, etc.) Get close and push an attacker into the gunman as a distraction then quickly take control of the gun.

Practice these basic principles with good sparring partners using fake weapons. Make sure that you are aware of your surroundings and use improvised weapons or even the environment to defend yourself. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self defense against a grenade attack

While you probably think self defense against grenades is ridiculous or useless, explosives have been used by school shooters such as in the Columbine massacre. They had the knowledge and materials needed to make explosive devices. Let's say that you are in a situation and you get attacked by an active shooter or terrorists, how would you respond to a grenade landing near you? This guide will help you.

1) Recognize the threat - Keep a watchful eye on what goes on. Do you see someone carrying a grenade? Do you see suspicious activity? Keeping track of the suspicious people who walk in or around buildings will give you cues of a potential danger.

2) Attack and/or take cover - If by chance, you are at close range to an attacker who pulls out a grenade and is about to detonate it, attack. Trap the hand and take your enemy down. Do an immobilizing strike (strike to the throat, side of neck, temple, and other pressure points) if possible Secure the weapon as you prevent the pin from being pulled and carefully perform a disarm as you secure the arm. I don't recommend punching your attacker in case the grenade falls or the pin is removed as shown in this video because there's so little time. I do however recommend using your enemy as a shield. That being said, reposition your enemy over the grenade if possible and take cover.

If you are at a long distance and a grenade is thrown, sprint then take cover. If you can use a wall or another obstacle to shield you from the blast then do so. If not then your best bet is to get down and tuck your arms in as you close your legs with your feet pointing at the grenade. Why do this? Because even if you avoid the explosion, you can still die from the shrapnel and debris caused by it. By protecting all of your vital areas, you minimize that risk. You should also yell "grenade!" to warn those in the military or those who've been trained to respond to explosives.

3) Escape - Right after the grenade has detonated, you need to escape as quickly as you can to avoid the possibility of gunfire.

Spend time practicing these tips with an object mimicking a grenade. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. If you have a weapon, why learn martial arts?

The guns vs. martial arts debate has been a fascinating one even to me. A question people seem to be wondering is "if you have a gun, why learn hand to hand combat?" As i mentioned in my blog post "why relying on weapons will get you killed" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/why-relying-on-weapons-will-get-you.html ), i've already listed several key reasons why using only weapons is a bad idea. Why should you learn hand to hand combat?

First, most situations don't require a gun and would be legally or physically dangerous if you do use one. Many people use guns and think about survival than about the legal consequences that follow. According to law, you are generally only allowed to shoot if someone is using lethal force against you. Other than that, you could be convicted of a crime and sentenced to prison. If you want to do time in jail or prison every-time a violent situation arises and possibly get your gun taken away then by all means use a gun for self defense. If you want to learn how to avoid that then you should learn hand to hand combat in addition to firearms training.

The other critical reason why you should learn hand to hand combat in addition to gun self defense is because you need to create distance, time, and speed in order to use your gun effectively. Guns are long range weapons. Fists are short range weapons. If you don't know how and when to use each one appropriately, you may find yourself wrestling with an attacker over your gun. If you can land the first shot with no problems and your enemies scatter then good! If you lose the gun then that's very bad for you. I once saw a video of a gun defense instructor teach students that when faced with multiple attackers, you should punch one guy and then clinch as you fire two shots in him before you shoot at the others. This is very bad advice because the other attackers could hit you from behind and take the gun away from you. By using guns and hand to hand combat together, you are better equipped to defend yourself. When fighting multiple attackers, you beat them up. If someone draws a gun, you could either disarm or use an attacker as a shield before you draw your own gun and fire. If the gun jams or you run out of ammo, you could still use it as a melee weapon and do some serious damage.

While this would work in theory, the chances of you needing a gun in self defense are rare and often pose more problems than solutions. A study done showed that there was no advantage to using guns than other means of self defense.

In conclusion, you can't just simply "point and shoot" without considering the potential consequences that follow such as killing an innocent person by accident.

How to defend yourself against a bottle

Let's suppose your in a bar and get into a fight with someone who intends on hurting you. He or she might try to hit you with a glass bottle. This is potentially dangerous as you could get a vital area cut so you have to be aware of your surroundings. This guide will help you through the process.

* Intercept your attacker - Soon as your attacker raises the bottle, you go right in and either attack or disarm him or her. Make sure your hands are on arm controlling the bottle.

*Keep your distance - use kicks and other forms of evasion to control the distance between you and your attacker.

* Use an improvised weapon - you could use a long range weapon to keep the distance and destroy the glass bottle if possible.

* Treat it as you would a knife - if your attacker breaks the bottle to use it as a stabbing weapon, treat it as you would a knife (see http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-knife.html.) Get a hold of the arm controlling the bottle and break it or knock the glass out of his or her hands.

Knife disarming tips

If you've read my posts on "self defense against a knifeman" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-knife.html)  and gun disarming then you'll notice that the same principles apply to knife disarming (ex. redirecting the line of attack, understanding distance, timing, etc.) When training, here are several tips on dealing with a knifeman along with some helpful videos.

Understand the warning signs of a potential attack - A person planning to use a knife will give away several cues through body language. Keep at a distance from a suspicious person. Be aware of your surroundings. You will find in several instances where a seemingly normal person suddenly draws a knife and starts stabbing away at his or her victim.

Use a long range weapon - If you have a bat or stick, use it against your knife wielding attacker to keep the distance while attacking. You could continue attacking or perform a disarm. This video demonstrates how this works.

Practice simple and effective techniques - The reason why many knife techniques don't work against a fully committed knife attacker is because they are too complex and work only against a cooperative partner. If the techniques don't address the possibility that the knifeman may disrupt your technique by moving or fighting back then they are ineffective. It's about quality over quantity techniques. The techniques you learn must address as well as include the line of attack, possible resistance, distance, isolation, timing, and be done with no wasted movement. Ideally, you will want to A) Stop the knifeman's attacking motion B) control the knife wielding arm with both hands C) Move to the side of the knifeman and isolate the arm from the body. D) Disarm. Why would i want to control the knife wielding arm with both hands? If i simply grab the wrist but not the elbow, the knifeman could pull back and stab me. Why would i want to move to the side of the knifeman or behind him or her as i control the arm? If i stay in front of my attacker, he/she could attack me with his or her free limbs (punches, kicks, headbutts, etc.)

Learn how to deal with a knife from behind -  If someone holds you at knifepoint from behind, you distract the knifeman before you redirect the knife arm away from your body as you control it with both hands then go for a disarm. Let's suppose that someone grabs you with a rear naked choke from behind and puts a knife to your throat. You must trap the hand without the knifeman seeing, redirect the line of attack away from your body, turn the weapon arm, reposition it, and attack or disarm.

Learn how to deal with a knife on the ground - If you are in a position where the knifeman is ontop of you and is about to strike, you control the knifehand with both hands then buck over as you disarm. If the knife is at your throat, you trap the knife hand as you redirect it then buck and disarm. It's very important that you get out of the bottom position when on the ground because it's very dangerous for you to stay there.

Learn how to deal with slashing - Let's suppose that a knifeman comes charging in on you with fast aggressive slashes. Create distance via kicking legs and practice perfect timing. If the slashes are moving in a predictable pattern (left to right and vice versa) then you intercept the knife hand before or after the knife passes your centerline. If the knifeman is a bit more methodical in his or her approach, you drop down and explosively go for the leg at a reasonable close distance. The knifeman won't expect your movement and will thus not be able to change the direction of the knife attack in time to strike you.

Learn how to deal with ice pick grip attacks - Let's suppose the knifeman comes at you with an ice pick grip and stabs downwards. You could cross your arms into an "X" shape above your head to stop the arm then quickly grab the elbow, turn it, and control the arm as you move to the outside. You could also move to the outside as you redirect the arm away from you then grab the knifeman's elbow and wrist.

Practice stop hits - If someone came in stabbing you at full speed, you could perform a stop hit to briefly stop the knifeman's forward thrusting motion and allow you a split second to control the attacker's arm. A stop hit could be a double palm strike, a hammerfist,a chop, etc. You could also grab the knifeman's elbow and knock the knife out of the wielder's hand.

Avoid the leveraging hand - Some knife attackers will grab your shirt or put you in a rear naked choke that is half applied to use as leverage so they can better strike you with the other hand. Don't get so focused on the knife that you forget about this hand. Why is the leveraging hand dangerous? Because your attacker can control where you move and has a better position to strike you at full speed. It also makes it difficult for you to disarm the weapon. As soon as someone grabs your shirt or wraps his or her arm around your throat, you know it's bad news so you must act quickly. As soon as someone tries to grab you, move to the outside (behind the knifeman or to the side) and attack. If someone manages to grab your shirt, break the grip, and attack from the outside. If someone tries to apply a chokehold, start attacking with elbow strikes, headbutts, punches, etc. You could probably apply a Judo or Jiu Jitsu throw and attack your opponent from there. In this video, you will observe how knife attackers grab ahold of their victims with the free hand while attacking them with the knife.

Attack the knife wielder, not the weapon - Sometimes it's better if you attacked the person holding the knife rather than the knife itself. If someone charges in trying to stab you, move to the side and perform a side kick or trip your attacker over. Knock your attacker off balance before you perform a disarm.

Disrupt the knifeman's balance - By knocking your attacker off balance be it a sweep kick or otherwise and trapping him or her on the ground, you are in a better position to perform a disarm.

Distractions - Use verbal and non-verbal communication to distract your attacker. If you could throw something to block the attacker's vision (a shirt, a bag, keys, etc.), you give yourself a brief moment to go for an attack and a disarm.

Practice timing and controlling the distance - It doesn't matter how fast your knife attacker is, you can still disarm a knifeman with timing and distance control. It's much more efficient to time a stop hit against one out of a thousand quick thrusts than to try and grab the knife hand. Distance is also important but don't keep a distance for too long or your knife attacker will eventually hit you.
