How to apply ninjutsu in self defense training

Ninjutsu is a Japanese system historically used in Feudal Japan involving espionage, unconventional warfare, hit and run tactics, and much more. Ninjutsu has been historically shrouded in mystery and often glamorized in Hollywood. In this guide, i'll give you some insights and resources on how to apply ninjutsu to your self defense training.

* Discard what's useless and simplify your skills - While you may expect to learn a wide range of ninjutsu skills, the reality is much of it is useless in today's world. You realistically won't be running around in ninja attire infiltrating buildings and using all sorts of weapons in combat. There's no point in training with weapons that you won't carry or legally be able to use in combat. If you are to efficiently practice ninjutsu, you'll only need a limited set of essential skills for self defense.

* Be evasive - Evading a threat in Ninjutsu is one skill set that will prove useful today. If you are to be successful in self defense, you must evade a potentially violent threat before it even emerges. This can be done by remaining anonymous on the web for example. If an armed attacker barges in a public place, you can use stealth techniques from Intonjutsu to silently make an escape or conceal yourself. If you are aware of a potentially threatening person following you, it's wise to divert him or her into a false path. You could also put your potential threat in a position where he or she cannot pursue you without revealing themselves in the process. You can use a distraction to blind your attacker in combat such as powder before escaping.

* Use deception - The essence of ninjutsu is deception. Deception is not dressing in a black ninja suit and performing flashy magic tricks as Hollywood depicts. There's various tactics that are useful in deceiving your attacker such as feints, psychological manipulation, propaganda, persuasion, and so on. Appear strong when weak and weak when strong. One of the ultimate skills of ninjutsu is manipulating your target's perception rather than engaging in combat.

* Blend in with the environment - Part of ninjutsu is using the environment to your advantage to avoid detection. It's critical to have an in-depth understanding of the environment in order to use your ninjutsu skills effectively. You can use camouflage and stealth techniques to evade or engage the enemy when necessary as depicted below.

Certain skills such as Hensojutsu are essential to survival namely in hostage situations. Hensojutsu is the art of disguise and impersonation. Hensojutsu is not just putting on a costume, it involves a deep understanding of sociology. You must have knowledge of the particular social role you want to impersonate. Attackers from criminal organizations may kill or torture you if they suspect you are a potential threat. Applying Hensojutsu such as pretending to be a compliant citizen may save your life. Below is an excellent example of Hensojutsu from a documentary applied to the modern world.

The essence of becoming invisible is not disturbing the course of nature but flowing with it. Blending in with your environment isn't just moving in silence. It's also leaving absolutely no trace behind.

* Practice Espionage - Another set of essential skills in Ninjutsu is intelligence gathering and counter-intelligence. In certain scenarios such as terrorist hijackings, espionage is a valuable skill set to have. You'll need to engage all of your senses and gather as much intelligence on your enemy as possible. You may also need to leak that intelligence to police officials for example. Counter-intelligence serves to sabotage a potential threat's attempt to spy on you such as an assassin.

In conclusion, these are just some Ninjutsu skills that you can apply in self defense. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Why learn hand to hand combat for self defense?

It might be obvious that a big part of self defense is hand to hand combat. Nevertheless its important to understand why that is so. Is hand to hand combat required? No but I'll give you a few reasons why you should learn some bad hand to hand combat skills.

One of the reasons you should learn hand to hand combat is for the advantages it brings. You can knock someone out, keep attackers at bay, do weapons disarms, and alot more. You also have control over the degree of deadly force you use. You can't get that from weapons alone or a one size fits all approach. Deadly weapons only have a high degree of lethal force for killing your attackers. If you read my post "why relying on weapons will get you killed" (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/12/why-relying-on-weapons-will-get-you.html) then you understand why relying weapons alone for self defense isn't a smart idea. Even in situations where deadly weapons are involved, hand-to-hand combat will be useful in creating distance between you and your attacker as you use your own weapons.

As for the one size fits all approach, people tend to underestimate attackers who mean them harm. If you were to ask people what they'd do if they were attacked, some of the answers you'll get will be "well i'd just kick him in the balls..." Not denying the effectiveness of a groin strike but it's easier said than done. There's several variables that affect whether you are successful or not. Your attacker might be wearing a jock strap, move out of range, have a high pain tolerance, or be on drugs. How likely are you to land a groin strike in a chaotic situation with a moving attacker? Even if you land a groin strike but that's not enough to take him or her down, what will you do then?

Here's one very fine example where relying only on weapons did not work. A police officer approaches a man who is a former heavyweight boxer and the boxer decides to attack him. The officer uses pepper spray which fails then his gun. The officer fires and lands a direct hit but the boxer keeps fighting. The boxer disarms him and attempts to shoot him but the gun jams then uses it as a melee weapon. From what it seems like, the officer has no training in hand-to-hand combat which is a huge disadvantage in this situation. The only thing that saved the officer were his peers.

While you might not get attacked by a heavyweight boxer or be put in this situation, the point is your attacker is unpredictable. There's no one solution that's going to work for every situation as far as the physical aspects of combat go. If your weapons don't work or you get disarmed like in this situation, your in deep trouble. Hand to hand combat helps build confidence and understanding of what to do in case your first attack doesn't succeed.

Should you kill in self defense?

When it comes to self defense, there arises the issue of whether you should kill in self defense or not. How do you know if you must kill an attacker or not? Should you kill an attacker if your life depended on it?

Generally, you should not kill in self defense. You should at most incapacitate your attacker to prevent him or her from attacking you further and that should be enough to save your life. Only in extreme cases where you have no other choice but to kill your attacker. Should you kill in self defense? It all boils down to these questions 1) Can you do it? 2) Can you provide evidence that killing your attacker is justified in court? 3) Are you willing to accept the consequences of your actions?

The mistake many people make is just assuming that they can kill someone because a law in their state permits it. They think "well the laws in my state permit me to shoot a home intruder..." That might be true but it does not mean that you will be justified in self defense. Once you have killed someone in self defense, you have committed homicide period. The question is whether or not your homicide was justifiable and your life will go through dramatic changes. There will be a police investigation to determine whether or not you are telling the truth. You will be held under suspicion and probably treated as a criminal. You will be questioned and the evidence at the crime scene will be examined. The authorities will ask why you didn't flee or take any other preventive measures before resorting to killing your attacker. You will need to provide sufficient evidence to prove that your attacker was intending to kill you. Your word is not enough to prove that your killing was justified. It's your words against those who prosecute you. If you cannot prove that you committed justifiable homicide in court, chances are you will lose in court. You will be punished and possibly serve time in prison.

That's why simply using guns to resolve every situation is a very bad idea because a gun is a lethal weapon. You cannot simply shoot someone because he or she threatened to kill you or had a knife. You cannot kill someone because an unarmed attacker broke into your house. The level of force used must be proportional to the perceived threat or it's not reasonable. If you shoot someone swinging punches at you then the level of force used is not proportional to the threat. You are using too much force for a situation that did not merit it and could've been resolved through other means via. hand to hand combat or running away.

After you've killed someone in self defense, you must be willing to pay the consequences. It could be time in prison, a fine, guilt, PTSD, loss of a job, the list goes on. Killing seems easy at first but your life might suffer in the long run once your attacker is dead. This case of a woman who shot her boyfriend is just one example where killing brought alot of problems.

Should you kill someone in self defense? It all depends on the circumstances and your judgement. You should never be reckless. You should always have self control in these situations. Did you do everything you could to avoid resorting to taking someone else's life? Is killing your attacker the only way to ensure your safety and end the threat? These are all important considerations to take into account because killing is a choice that will affect you for the rest of your life.

Science and self defense

I'm going to be honest and say that almost all of the self defense systems you see out there are unreliable. Reason why i say that is because they haven't been tested by science. I have not seen one scientific study examining the effectiveness of a martial art or a "reality based self defense system." Of course you'll find some studies such as "Fight Science" (see video below) examining the nature of martial arts' legends but fighting is quite different from self defense.

Science is about making observations and testing out ideas. It's about establishing a controlled environment and eliminating possible biases that could affect the results. Science is about making measurements and applying what is scientifically known to the real world. Unfortunately, so many self defense instructors rely on experience or tradition to draw their own conclusions on what they deem is effective self defense.

For example some police officers teaching self defense will tell you something along the lines of "I've worked with many people using guns so in my experience the best way to deal with a gun is..." Easy for them to say because they are police officers. Their job isn't self defense. Their job is to subdue and prosecute criminals. Police officers rarely have to deal with gun disarming because they almost always make sure they carry loaded guns. Police officers have guns, batons, chemical sprays, tasers, back up, the list goes on. You don't on the other hand. There are so many different variables and factors in each violent situation. Do you really think it's a smart idea to base your self defense training on one cop's experience?

Too many people are looking for the ultimate fighting system for self defense that will protect them in every situation. The reality is there is none because almost none have been tested in a scientific setting. There are simply too many factors and safety concerns that it's nearly impossible to repeatedly test in a lab. Some martial arts masters have failed to live up to their training when it came to a completely different variable as shown in this video below. In the end, all we have are theories when it comes to techniques and combat. What happens is people learn combat in a certain school then end up not using it, using only some of it, or use it only to find it's useless in a real violent encounter. If we cannot scientifically test self defense combat systems or martial arts effectiveness in violence, we cannot expect to have reality-based self defense.

What's the best way to learn how to defend yourself? Use your head, not your fists. Study the human body and it's weaknesses. Study physics and it's relationship to the body. Study the proper force and speed needed to deliver a knock out or incapacitating blow. Study criminal behavior. Study how crimes occur and the warning signs of an impending attack. Study human behavior and human relationships. Study the environment that you are in. Listen, learn, and continue to have an open mind. Apply the knowledge that you've learned in self defense rather than relying on a system to do all the work for you.

Self defense against police brutality

Police brutality has been a problem in history for generations and many deaths have happened because of it. How do you defend yourself against police brutality? This self defense guide will teach you the essentials in surviving an attack from corrupt cops.

1) Know the laws in your vicinity - Without understanding the laws in your location, you won't be able to know when the police are acting out of line. If you act out of line, you will probably get prosecuted.

2) Comply - If you are unlawfully given orders by a corrupt police, comply. Don't try to argue and get violent. Some people like to do this to provoke the police and the result is they end up getting beaten. You will have time to justify yourself in the court of law later. You must realize at the present moment, the cop has weapons and you don't. You do not want under any circumstances give the police a reason to attack you.

3) Draw as much attention to yourself as possible - Get others to record the situation with their cameras. This helps build your case of self defense and makes it less likely for the police to engage in police brutality. If you don't have witnesses, it's going to be very hard to prove you were acting in self defense. Make sure that your eyes are on the cops and not wandering elsewhere. Keep track of the unlawful behavior of the cop.

4) Know when to defend yourself - If you've complied by doing everything that was asked of you and the police officer still wants to attack you, it's time to strike. You defend yourself against the police in the same manner you would any street attacker. Make sure that you avoid the shield or push against it and use it to avoid the line of attack as shown in this video. Be cautious of the cop calling for back up as you don't know whether or not the other officers are corrupt or unaware of the corrupt officer's behavior. If the officer is wearing body armor, strike at unprotected areas of the body.

Self defense against a hostage situation

This self defense guide will teach you what to do in a hostage situation. Let's suppose that your in a bank or store when suddenly, an armed attacker or attackers take you hostage. It's very important that you have an idea of what to do in those scenarios as many things could go wrong.

* Disarm - If you are the only one taken hostage then you apply the same principles as you would if you were disarming a gunman or knifeman (see "how to disarm a gunman" http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-gunman.html and "self defense against a knifeman" http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2016/11/self-defense-against-knife.html). If you and your attacker are surrounded by police then you have the advantage. Distract him or her before you attack. If possible, try to get the attacker to direct the weapon away from you. As soon as you sense an opportunity then strike with explosive speed. Control the weapon, redirect the line of attack, take your attacker down, and disarm. This video explains which techniques don't work and which one is more effective in a hostage scenario.

* Comply - If you and other people are taken hostage by multiple attackers then comply. Do whatever the armed attackers ask of you and get into a non-threatening posture. Doesn't matter how much self defense you know, it's safer to comply in these situations. You don't want to risk any innocent people getting hurt or killed. You and others also face the risk of getting accidentally shot by the police.

* Gather and leak information - As you comply, gather as much information as you can on your attackers. Are they mentally ill? Are they committing an armed robbery? Are they terrorists with a political agenda? What demands are they making? Who are they making the demands to? Do they intend on killing the hostages eventually? Where are they located? Where are the hostages located? Is there only one attacker or multiple? What kind of environment are you in? When you've gathered enough information on who your hostage takers are then you ought to find a way to leak it to the police. You could leave a door unlocked, a window open, create an opening in an area of the building, messages, etc. so the police can gather intelligence. If you can't then don't worry about it. Your safety should be your first priority. The information you get also lets you know what the proper response is.

* Escape - If you have an opportunity to escape without your attackers noticing then do so. Give other hostages the opportunity to escape undetected if possible. Otherwise, lay low and comply with your hostage takers.

* Empathize with your hostage takers - Try to get them to see you and others as human beings. Figure out why they are taking you hostage and what they want. This allows you to get a glimpse of the kind of people they are.

* Plan your moves - Complying isn't enough, you should already have a plan A and plan B then a plan C. Plan A should be comply. Plan B should be to leak info. or escape. Your last plan should be to fight. Don't just lay or sit there waiting for the police to rescue you. Hoping that they'll come in and save you while you remain completely unharmed is unrealistic. By the time they come in, you might already be dead. In the meantime, you need to be proactive and use your time wisely.

* Have a plan of attack - As soon as the hostage takers intend on killing or torturing their hostages and the police haven't arrived yet then you need to act quickly. You should've collaborated with the other hostages in taking out the hostage takers at some point. Use the environment to your advantage. Use whatever weapons and methods of distraction are available. Remember when faced with multiple hostage takers, the best way to deal with them is dealing with one at a time. You will need to take out at least one armed hostage taker as quickly and as silently as possible then disarm him or her without alerting the others. Even if it's not possible, you just need enough time to get the weapon and attack. In these types of situations, the use of deadlier force might be necessary than in a normal self defense situation. You might need to kill as many as you can with your bare hands or the weapon. As soon as the police enter or the hostage takers are eliminated, you need to comply with the police. Get down on the ground with your hands above your head and drop your weapons to communicate the police that you are not a threat.

In this particular situation, notice how the gunman pointed his gun at a man and the man responded by attempting a disarm. Immediately, the others rushed in to tackle the gunman and disarmed him. If you are trained in dealing with weapons and these types of situations then you have to take the initiative. By taking the initiative, you inspire others to take action.

Practice these tips with multiple sparring partners in various scenarios. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Why dialing 911 will get you killed in self defense

Some people have the notion that they don't need to learn any martial art or steps to defend themselves. They think that calling the police is enough to stop a crime from happening. There are several problems with dialing 911 that will get you killed in self defense.

The first is the distance and time of an attack. Let's suppose you are on the street and someone out of nowhere attacks you within 5 feet. It's ridiculous to think you would have time to pull out your phone and dial 911. You would've dropped your phone or your attacker wouldn't have allowed you to commit to any action. The average time it takes for the police to arrive to your house is around 10 minutes (1). Do you realistically expect the cops to make it in time before you are about to get seriously hurt or killed? Think again.

The second is that under stress, you wouldn't be able to dial 911. You would probably freeze up and that would hinder you from dialing any number. Your phone might not even be working or worse, your phone conversation gives your exact location to your attacker.

The last and biggest problem with simply dialing 911 is that the police are under no obligation to legally protect you. The Supreme court has ruled this in the Warren vs. Distract of Columbia case. What about the "to serve and protect" phrase? Well that only applies to the state, not to you. This video explains more.

It is thus your own responsibility to defend yourself in a life or death situation. The purpose of dialing 911 is to address civil matters and conduct criminal investigations. Cops are there to enforce the law, not to be your own personal bodyguards. If you are to dial 911, you must address the most immediate threat first or have someone else call the police. Once you are out of danger, you can then dial 911 to handle a violent criminal.

Why relying on weapons will get you killed

You've probably heard people ask "what's the best weapon to defend myself? Should i use a gun? A knife? A stun gun? A taser?" While salesman and companies offer weapons for self defense. What they don't want you to know is that - there is no best weapon for self defense! They are essentially lying to you by giving you false confidence that you can defend yourself for profits. They don't warn you about the severe drawbacks in each weapon. There are four questions you must ask yourself before you even consider purchasing a weapon 1) Am i able to use it? 2) Do i know how to use it? 3) Am i prepared to use it? 4) Do i have a strategy when i'm using it? I will go over several weapons and explain why each one is ineffective under the wrong circumstances.

* Gun - I've heard alot of people say "i don't need to learn martial arts, a gun will solve everything.." First of all, the laws on self defense are very complex. If you can't build a solid case in which you can legally justify it was self defense then you will get punished under the court of law. There's been several cases where people have used guns  Someone can pull out a knife, say "I'm gonna kill you!", and you are still not legally justified in shooting that person. Unless he/she rushes towards you and clearly tries to kill you, you are legally justified in using a gun. By then, it's already too late as you'd have been stabbed many times. There are a bunch of people sitting in jail right now because they illegally used a gun and failed to adhere to the legal laws on self defense.

According to the 21 foot rule outlined for police officers, it takes at least 21 feet for an officer to be safe from a knifeman. If your at a distance from a knifeman and you can shoot then good for you. The problem is not every knifeman will attack that way. Some will have it concealed. Do you realistically expect to draw your gun and stop someone charging at you from a few feet? Another issue with using a gun is that it's very hard to shoot and stop a moving target at vital areas especially under high levels of stress. Adrenaline rushes can greatly increase the chances of people taking 2 and more gunshots as they attack you at full force. The idea that you can just shoot an attacker twice and the attacker's down is Hollywood fiction.

This is one of my favorite videos i love to use as an illustration of what happens when gunmen confront a knifeman. Notice how many times police shot him and he still kept attacking! Do you think the gun was the appropriate weapon of choice in that situation?

* Knife - Just because the gun poses several problems, doesn't mean a knife is any safer. Same problems apply under the court of law. A knife poses the same problems as a gun. Realistically, you won't be able to stop an attacker in an adrenaline rush coming at you head on. You probably wouldn't even have time to draw your weapon if the attacker rushes in before you pull it out. If you do draw a knife, you would need to strike at vital areas in order for a knife to be effective. Against a highly aggressive and violent attacker, you probably wouldn't be able to do it accurately especially if you don't know how to handle stress. Even if you hit a vital area, the attacker may not even feel it and just keep attacking. It takes alot of time for the attacker to bleed out and by the time the attacker does, you'll probably be dead or seriously hurt. There's also the great danger that the attacker may knock the knife out of your hand and take it away from you. What would you do then?

* Stun guns and tasers - More reasonable than a deadly weapon but it still has fatal flaws. You'd have to get very close to an attacker which is what you don't want in order for it to work and many times - it does not work. Many police officers have found that criminals who are under high levels of adrenaline resist the effects of stun guns. If your attacker is wearing thick clothing, it makes the stun gun harder to penetrate. It also takes a few seconds for it to take effect upon contact. Do you realistically expect this weapon to work against a non-compliant attacker or multiple attackers? A taser is more effective as it fires probes into attackers and immobilizes their movements but it still has it's drawbacks. If you miss a violent attacker with a deadly weapon which is highly likely under stress, you don't have enough time to reload the cartridge and fire again as you would with a gun. Even if you land a direct hit, the attacker can STILL resist! If you need proof, just watch this video.

A trained police officer hunts down a perp and uses the taser. Only ONE of the probe actually gets stuck on the perp, reducing it's effectiveness before it gets seemingly torn off due to movement. The police officer gets shot in the leg shortly afterwards. Realistically, would a taser have been appropriate in these types of situations?

* Pepper sprays, mace, and other chemical weapons - These weapons also have the same problems that stun guns have. There's no guarantee that the pepper spray or other chemical based weapons will completely stop your attacker. If you miss, your in deep trouble. Watch what happens when cops use pepper spray on a man high off of PCP and how ineffective it was in subduing him. The wind and other environmental factors can render any spray weapons useless.

Still not convinced? Check this video out. By the time you spray your attacker in the face, he/she would've already landed several attacks before the effects start to kick in.

A gun does not make you a skilled shooter anymore than a guitar makes someone a musician. It's all about how pro-efficient you are in the weapon. In what situations is the weapon useful and what situations will it get you killed? What's your 2nd line of defense in case your primary line of defense fails? You have only your mind to rely on when weapons fail you. If you don't know the strengths and weaknesses of your weapon then my advice to you is don't use it until you do.

Self defense against a knife

Weapons are a great equalizer against any trained martial artist. They have the potential to seriously injure or kill in one attack if you are not careful then you could seriously end up hospitalized or dead.

While there are self defense guides teaching you a complex step by step guide on how to defend against someone armed with a knife, the reality of the situation may not allow you to perform those techniques. A frenzied attacker would ideally charge at you with a series of stabs and cuts as opposed to just one fatal stab. You won't have time to react quickly enough against a very mobile attacker. Therefore, it is best to resort to simplicity. There are some fundamental principles that will ensure a successful disarm against someone attacking you with a knife within a short amount of time. The basic principles are as follows:

* Control

* Close the gap

* Takedown

* Disarm

1) Know the signs - Be aware of the people around you. Don't get too close to a complete stranger. In many cases, knifemen ambush you with a flurry of attacks. Have a plan in motion. Are you in a reasonable distance to escape via running? Are you in a confined area? Are there cars? People? Police nearby? Cameras? How will you respond against a knife attack? Be aware of your surroundings and a potential attacker. This video shows you different types of knife attacks.

2) Determine the attacker's intent - Is your attacker trying to kill you or rob you? If your attacker gives you a chance to save your life then take it by all means. If however your attacker is bent on killing or kidnapping you then it's time to respond.

3) Accept the likelihood of pain - If unarmed, your likely to get stabbed or cut. Regardless, many have survived knife attacks through willpower. The more mentally prepared you are for pain, the more chances you have of surviving. Don't give up even if you have been struck once. Keep fighting until you can no longer fight.

4) Use a weapon - What weapons are at your disposal? Sticks? Pipes? A sword? Chairs? A gun? Use them as an equalizer to a knifeman. Remember anything can be used as a weapon - sweaters, shirts, glass, sand, a wall, a door, a tree, etc. By using weapons, you increase your chances of survival than if you were unarmed.

5) Know which techniques are practical - There are many martial arts and self defense instructors that teach impractical disarming techniques in complex steps. As i mentioned before, your not going to have time to perform them. It doesn't take much for a knifeman to move back and move his knife with his wrist then stab you from another angle. Keep things simple and follow the basic principles mentioned above to guide you to proper disarming techniques. I've found an excellent video by Martial Arts Tutorials and Fight tips explaining how easy it is for a knife attack to occur. It also explains how to deal with a knifeman using the fundamental principles of situational awareness, closing the gap, timing, speed, controlling and isolating the weapon, and so forth.

6) Move around the direction of attack - When a knifeman strikes at you, he/she will likely move in to strike. When that happens, move to the side or behind the attacker where he/she is at a vulnerable position. The more distance you create by moving back, the more likely you are to get struck.

7) Control the offending limb - Once you've gotten in a position to disarm the knifeman, control the knifeman's arm by grabbing the wrist and elbow quickly. Controlling the elbow and wrist with both hands is vital to disarming an attacker. If you only grab hold of either the knifemans's wrist or elbow, it's very easy for the knifeman to pull away or rotate their arm to strike you and attack you with the other free hand.

8) Takedown the knifeman - Kicking the knees or behind them or sweeping his or her legs off balance as you drive your bodyweight with your knees on your attacker's back will ideally make disarming easier. It's more efficient to deal with one limb for a disarm than to deal with a knifeman's kicks, headbutts, and other hand if he/she were standing up. The faster you can disarm a knifeman, the better.

8) Immobilize a knifeman - Some self defense videos suggest attacking a knifeman and struggling for the weapon. While you may be forced to strike back in some cases, it will not work in others as the knifeman may be drugged to resist pain. You should focus on immobilizing an attacker by breaking or momentarily stunning the arm holding the knife, making a knife disarm easier. Doesn't matter how tolerant to pain a knifeman is, he/she cannot attack you effectively with a broken or stunned limb.

9) Retrieve the knife - Once the knife is in your hand, toss it into an area where your attacker will not be able to reach such as an ocean, a rooftop, etc. Land a few blows if your attacker is still bent on attacking you then run away to safety.

Key points to keep in mind:

* Focus - Your focus should not be on the knife. Your focus should be on the person controlling it. Control and attack the knifeman in order to eliminate the threat.

* Timing - Perfect timing is critical in disarming a knifeman. You must respond quickly. By timing your hands to grab hold of your attacker's offending arm and controlling, you are better able to disarm him or her.

* Control the distance - Always control the distance between you and an attacker. Never allow him or her to get too close or too far away. If you have difficulty controlling the offending arm then keep your distance with kicks to the groin or knees and strikes to the head. Don't kick above the waist as it leaves your legs exposed to the knife. Even keeping a few centimeters away from a knife can mean the difference between life and death.

* Use your environment - Don't get so caught up in disarming your attacker that you forget about your surroundings. Use the environment to your advantage. Pushing the knifeman off a bridge or an ocean could be your opportunity to survive an attack. Just pushing a knifeman into a brick wall could cause him/her to suffer a concussion or momentarily knock him/her off balance, allowing you the perfect opportunity to close the gap for a disarm. Using a barrier between you and a knifeman may also help. There's many ways you could use the environment to potentially disarm or even escape from a knifeman.

* Vision - A knifeman's vision is important. Blinded or distracted by other objects will serve to your advantage. Gouge and strike at your attacker's eyes. Do whatever you can to get him/her's focus away from the weapon.

* Various knife attacks - There are different kinds of knife attacks from behind, front, side, in different forms such as stabbing or slashing at high speeds. The knifeman may openly or stealthily attack you. Be prepared to adapt to each one.

* Angle of attacks - Being cautious of the angles and trajectories of a knife attack allows you to evade or move to a safer position where you can either control or attack your opponent.

* Distractions - Whether your attacker is an armed robber or a murderer, distractions are key in creating an opportunity in attack. Communicating with your attacker is also a means of creating a brief distraction before you commit to an attack or disarm.

Spend some time practicing disarming techniques and principles with a partner in various scenarios with a rubber knife. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to my blog for updates, more advice, and exclusive content in the near future. Self Defense against a gunman

Self Defense against a gunman:

We've been told that when we are confronted with a gunman, we ought to comply with his demands and no amount of training in hand-to-hand combat would be effective but i beg to differ.

Your average gunman is unskilled in using a gun. A common mistake that many gunman make is to approach a victim at close range with the gun pressed against him or her. This gives you an opportunity to perform a gun disarm.

Pay close attention to how an armed robber with a shotgun approaches this man at such a close range and in a flash, the robber is disarmed.

What are the key factors in a successful gun disarm?

a) Speed - If your not quick to disarm an attacker, you will likely be shot. The faster you can remove the gun from a gunman's hands, the better chances you have of survival.

b) Deception - Usually, gunmen will assume that their targets will likely comply with their demands because they have a gun. Armed robbers will likely exert their power by coming close to you with the weapon pointed at you and assume that your weak. Many self defense videos and self defense instructors teach gun disarms at close range but neglect the communication aspect of these situations. How would you perform a gun disarm on gunmen who keep their distance? One tactic is deception. Give the appearance that your weak and that it's safe to approach you. Comply to the gunman's demands if he/she is trying to rob you by force. Communicate with them. Make distractions and once their focus is momentarily off the gun, disarm them.

C) Efficiency - Many self defense instructors teach you complicated moves and strikes expecting them to work in a violent situation. The truth of the matter is you may not have enough time or opportunity to use those techniques in a real situation. The last thing you want is to wrestle and fight over the gun only to have the gunman shoot you. What's the best way to deal with these situations? Simplicity and efficiency in movement. It's better to disarm a gunman with only the necessary force to break their grip on the gun and move away from the gunman than to fight over it.

d) Control - A gun's line of fire can only move in a straight line. Your focus should be on the person controlling the weapon. It's important to control the limb holding the gun rather than the weapon itself. If you try to grab hold of the weapon instead of grabbing hold of the gunman's arm and redirect the line of fire before a disarm, you will be shot. It's important to control the arm and break it if need be in order to retrieve the gun.

e) Vision - A gunman's vision is very important in shooting. If a gunman's vision is obstructed by objects and buildings, you have the upper hand in performing a gun disarm or preferably escaping. In this video, a gunman walks into a building and does not see a student in a room across from him. As the gunman reloads his weapon, the student rushes out blinding his vision with pepper spray and tackling him for a gun disarm. A gunman's vision can be the difference between life and death.

d) Plan ahead - The best way to deal with a gunman is to already have a plan in place. Pay close attention to your surroundings and opportunities to make your move. Don't simply run away from the attacker - have an idea of where you are running to. You don't want to run from a gunman only to face a dead end. Adapt to the situation and you will be able to deal with any type of gunmen.

In this example, a gunman places a gun to a Thai man's head. The gunman did not understand Thai which gave the hostage an advantage to communicate with police. The hostage distracted him and once the gunman's line of fire was redirected away from him, the hostage disarmed him quickly.

Practice gun disarms with a partner holding a rubber or toy gun. Do a variety of mock scenarios. Train intensely so that if a real situation with a gunman presents itself, you are physically and emotionally ready to deal with it.
