How to intercept and destroy limbs in JKD

In this self defense guide, i will teach you how to intercept your opponent which can be done either by a direct strike for a knock out or destroying a limb. Keep in mind that the way you apply Jeet Kune Do principles in the streets is different from the way you apply it for the sake of the art. In self defense, you must eliminate the threat quickly. If you don't, you will endanger yourself or others further.

1) Situational awareness - In order to intercept in Jeet Kune Do and end the threat quickly, you need to be aware of your environment. Who is a potential threat? Who isn't? Is there a potential for an ambush? Make mental notes of your surroundings.

2) Read body language - In these situations, it's important to read body language. Let's suppose you get into an argument with someone who's being aggressive towards you. If you don't know how to control distance and read body language then you won't be aware of an impending attack. There's several cues in the body that give away someone's intent of attack. Is your potential attacker's body tense? Is your potential attacker in a fighting stance? Is your potential attacker clinching his or her fists? How is the body positioned? You need to be aware of these cues and be ready to respond accordingly.

3) Empty your mind - In order for you to land an intercepting blow, you must empty your mind of all distractions and focus only on your response. You should have a peace of mind and body even under high pressure. If you are tense and afraid then you won't be able to respond effectively to your opponent. Thought and action must be in harmony with one another. When you sense your opponent is about to strike, you commit to your strike with power and precision. You cannot hesitate for a split second or your opponent will land the first strike.

4) Recognize the body's vital points - Your primary targets of attack should be the temple, jaw, under the chin, throat, neck, the nose area, back of head, and other areas of the head in order to knock your opponent out. For the arms, you could hit the biceps, ulnar nerve, shoulder, or armpit. Striking the leg's femoral nerve and other vital areas will incapacitate your opponent's legs upon impact. Spend time learning which areas of the body you ought to hit and for what purpose. This video gives some helpful insights on the arm's pressure points.

5) Intercept or destroy the limb - There are several ways you can intercept your opponent's attack. I will generally focus on the single direct attack leading to a knock out and limb destructions. To intercept with a single direct attack, you could evade and strike a pressure point responsible for a knock out. You could also deflect your opponent's attack while striking your opponent in a knock out pressure point. Moving to a side position as you attack is also effective for intercepting your opponent. For limb destructions, the goal is to destroy a limb's use in combat whether by breaking it or incapacitating it through nerve strikes. There are several possible applications for limb destructions. For example, you might come across a very tall attacker so it might be difficult to knock him or her out when he or she has a longer reach than you. There's several ways you could destroy the limb. One is by delivering an elbow strike to the fist, causing severe damage to the hand if not breaking it entirely. You could also deliver strikes to major nerves in the arm to numb it's use before you close in and cause a knock out. If you want to learn more about limb destructions, i recommend watching Master Wong's videos on JKD which are focused on teaching them.

Practice timing your interceptions and limb destructions in training with safety equipment (gloves, head gear, shin guards, etc.) Hitting your sparring partner in vital areas is risky so be careful not to apply too much force to avoid injury or causing a knock out.

Self defense against suicide bombers

Suicide attacks are very common in many different parts of the world. There's very little advice on how to defend yourself against suicide bombers. Nevertheless, this guide will try to address how to deal with suicide bombers. Keep in mind that your chances of surviving a suicide attack aren't that high once the bomb has detonated. There are generally two ways a bomb could go off 1) Manual detonation where the bomber him or herself has to trigger the explosion. 2) Remote detonation where someone else detonates the bomb on the bomber from a remote location.

1) Learn to read body language and respond - Your best line of defense is learning how to read body language and prevent putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. Once the attack has begun, it's too late so it's critical you focus on preventing the attack before it happens. Be aware of your surroundings and of people's body language. A suicide bomber may be stressed off knowing his or her life will end shortly, afraid of being arrested and compromising the mission, etc. Maybe you notice the suicide bomber pulls his or her shirt down to conceal a weapon via a bomb. Perhaps you may notice bizarre or suspicious behavior. Understand the psychology of a suicide bomber is crucial in survival. According to new research, there's growing evidence that people who become suicide bombers do so because they suffer from psychological problems (PTSD, suicidal tendencies, depression, despair, helplessness, etc.) rather than religious devotion (1). Learn as much as you can about a particular person you find suspicious and avoid him or her if possible.

2) Attack - The distance between you and the suicide bomber will tell you how to respond. If a suicide bomber suddenly stands up, pulls out a detonator, and reveals the bomb or possibly yells a battle cry such as "Allah Ahkbar!", act quickly. If you are very close to that person (close range), close the gap quickly deliver a strike to the face as a distraction (headbutts, elbows, punches, etc.) and control the hand holding the detonator. Hit one of the pressure points responsible for grip. This will cause the bomber to release the trigger reflexively. You could also try to break the arm. Chaim Koppel, an internal security defense system trainer, advises you grab the bomber's shins and pull back (2.) This will cause the bomber to instinctively put his or her hands forward to break the fall but dropping the bomb trigger in the process. If there is an opportunity, you could push the bomber off a building depending on the environment. If you are far away, it's best to throw a projectile such as a knife at the bomber's head. If you use a gun, you risk setting off the bomb. This is very risky and you could be unsuccessful but if it means saving other lives, it's the least you can offer.

3) Take cover - As soon as someone gives away his or her intentions of a suicide bombing, the same concept applies when dealing with a grenade (http://everythingselfdefense.blogspot.com/2017/01/self-defense-against-grenade-attack.html.) Keep your head and other vital areas protected as you get behind cover. In suicide bomb attacks involving an explosive belt, most people die from the shrapnel and debris than the actual explosion itself (3). Therefore, taking cover is critical to your survival if the option is there.

How to fight bigger, stronger, and tougher opponents

Coming across a person who's much stronger and bigger than you can be a scary experience but with the right principles, you can learn how to defend yourself against attacker regardless of size. Here are several strategies you can use against a huge attacker. Remember to use quickness to your advantage.

* Psychological defenses - The larger attacker may try to psychologically attack you by making himself look invincible and intimidating. Just think - if he was so powerful, why is he picking a fight with someone smaller than him? It's because he isn't that powerful. People who are truly confident in their abilities would not be looking for someone weaker than them. A stronger opponent can taunt you and make you feel vulnerable but always remember that he's just as vulnerable as you are. Don't let his size fool you. Be a predator.

* Never underestimate your attacker - Just because he's large and your faster, doesn't mean you can underestimate him. You don't know anything about him. You don't know how smart he is, whether or not he's a felon, if he's armed, knows how to wrestle or grapple, etc. He's not some meathead you can afford to play around with. Strength can be equally as dangerous as speed especially if you fail to acknowledge it.

* Strike first - One of the best strategies is to take the initiative and strike first. Learn how pressure points work and how you can use them to your advantage. This video is a perfect example of how a smaller guy knocked out a larger opponent. If you catch your large attacker off guard, you can end him in one punch. Even if he's dazed, that would be an ideal opportunity to make your escape.

* Keep your distance - Ensure that you are not within the large attacker's punching or kicking range. You never want to take it to the ground with a larger attacker unless your a good BJJ fighter. A larger person has longer limbs than a shorter person. Use your low kicks to keep the distance. Evade the larger attacker if needed. Get him exhausted before you launch an attack of your own.

* Strike at vulnerable areas - You can hit your attacker in the groin, eyes, sides of knees, throat, or the fleshy part on the outsides of their upper legs. By kicking on the sides of this part of their legs, you could destroy his ability to walk properly.

* Use his own force against him - The saying "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" rings true especially in these situations. If your good at martial arts or any combat system, you could deflect his attacks. Alternatively, you could simply evade his attacks as you kick or sweep him off balance.

* Escape - Is there an opportunity to escape? Take it. Do not think that you should stand and fight. You'll probably be able to run faster than him so take advantage of any opportunity you can take.
